Sirjan Global City for Kilim Weaving
Persian Kilim is one of the oldest Iranian handicrafts that dates back to more than five thousand years ago. Kilims are originally flat weaves that are made without using knots. Kilims have mostly been the profession of the nomads from many years ago, especially in southern regions of Iran. Sirjan, a city in the south of Kerman province, is now famous for its Kilims. High quality and innovations in patterns and colors of Sirjan Kilims resulted in the registration of this city as the global city of handwoven Kilim by the World Council of Handicrafts in 2017. Sirjan city produces antique kilims with traditional designs. 14,000 kilim weavers live in Sirjan that most of them are women. Women start this profession from an early age and continue until the end of their lives. Additionally, the designs are mostly based on the features of the surrounding nature. For example, trees, animals such as goats, birds, and camels, are included in the designs of kilim Sirjan. Sirjan also is known for its pistachios, and wind towers as tourist attraction. Some of Sirjan tourist attractions are Chopoqi Windcatcher, Tomb of Mire Zobeyr, Tomb of Shah Firooz, Sang Castle, etc. Sirjan has several of the largest companies such as Gole Gohar Mine, PolyTech and Gold Iran under license from LG.
